Year 6 - Maylands MasterChef
Back to Latest News
This week, Year 6 have enjoyed taking part in the annual Maylands MasterChef competition. As the children have been learning about Russia through our class reader 'The House with Chicken Legs,' they made a Russian dish of mushroom pie - piroshki - accompanied by a sour cream dip- vmochanka.
To make the piroshki, the children first visited the local shop to purchase all the ingredients they need for their recipes. When buying the ingredients, all children were focused on buying items with the 'best value for money' in mind, showing their secure mathematical knowledge.
Upon arrival back at school, the children then began working in groups to create their mushroom piroshki and vmochanka. This involved making the dough, mushroom filling and dip, which all required a range of advanced cooking skills. The skills include: peeling, grating, chopping, dicing, frying and kneading. Whilst the children were cooking, they were also able to show great hygiene and kitchen safety.
After their hard work in the kitchen, the children then plated up their mushroom piroshkis and vmochanka, with a focus on their presentation. All children tried the piroshki and many of them thoroughly enjoyed it. Some children said:
'I thought I didn't like mushrooms, but I rate this 11/10.'
'The dip was my favourite part - I could eat it with every meal!'
'I really loved the combination of the warm piroshki with the dip.'
'The dough is so soft and golden, it tastes delicious.'
Following their cooking, the children then wrote food reviews for the mushroom piroshki and vmochanka. Within their writing, the children were able to use their own experiences of cooking and tasting the dish to include specific vocabulary within their writing.
Well done to Year 6 for being fantastic MasterChefs!
