Year 3 - Sculptures

As we reached the end of our sculpture unit in Art the children created their own final piece. Inspired by Robert Smithson's 'Spiral Jetty' the children created their own spiral sculpture using wire and natural materials. Then they made their own plinth from clay to display their piece of art. They will be bringing it home to put in a special place or give to a special person soon!

This week we read a new story - Billy and the Dragon. The children will spend the next couple of weeks rewriting this wonderful picture book, learning how to craft descriptive settings and write an alternative ending. Once they have written their story, we will turn it into a picture book of their own! 

It's been all about the 4 times tables in Maths this week - help your child practise counting in 4s at home, and ask them random 4 times tables facts on the way to and from school! We have also been learning how to identify an acute, obtuse or right angle. 

In Science we continued our learning about Forces. We read 'Mrs Armitage on Wheels' and decided to conduct an investigation to see which road surface would be the best at slowing down her car if the brakes stopped working. The children had to make a prediction and then test each surface, recording the distance that the car travelled. Ask them to explain why the car stopped sooner on some surfaces than others.
