We started off easy! This morning we emptied the old flowers in the hanging baskets and replaced them with some cheerful sweet williams that hopefully should flower for a while and keep the baskets looking colourful. The children enjoyed pulling out the old plants and were quite adept at putting in the new ones. We then moved to the sweetcorn beds and finished harvesting any corn on the cob that were still growing. These were a bit small but we gave them to the dinner ladies to include with lunch. We then dug over the bed ready for planting the next veg we will grow. We took all the old plants to the compost. Plan for next week is much of the same, preparing beds for the next lot of planting.

Last week we really got our hands dirty - at least the children did! It has been so wet so it was very muddy. We spent the time going over the raised beds thoroughly getting rid of the weeds and even managed to find some potatoes. Some were tiny, the size of marbles, but Charlie managed to find a whopper! We took all the weeds to the compost and tidied up our area. We took the potatoes to the school kitchen and they said they would make them into a potato salad, but not before giving me the arduous task of getting the mud off..... We also harvested a pumpkin that grew so much bigger than the rest and used it as a competition at the school fireworks night - 'guess the weight of the pumpkin'. We had lots of guesses and in the end had two parents who guessed closest at 8.5kg. Its actual weight was 7.7kg! We are going to take the seeds from it and dry them out ready to plant again next year.
