On Monday we had a Jigsaw Day based around our topic 'Being Me'. The children discussed their goals for the year, and discussed potential obstacles for this. We talked about what life was like for us, and how this might be different to other children around the world. The children learnt about an inspirational role model, Malala Yousafzai, and about what life might be like for children growing up on a cocoa plantation in Ghana. Finally, we talked about the rewards and consequences surrounding the choices that we make and how this can affect not only ourselves but those around us.

This week the children really enjoyed learning about the indigenous people of North America and the different tribes they belonged to. Each pair chose 2 tribes to research and create a double-page spread about. The children found out about the tribes traditions, clothing, houses, food, skills and celebrations.

We celebrated National Poetry Day by learning to recite a free-form poem, and even wrote our own verses to add to it. The poem was based on a speech made by Chief Seattle in response to a letter from the President of the United States requesting to purchase his land. Ask your child to recite a verse of the poem to you.

In Science we have started to learn about the circulatory system and conducted an investigation about our changes in heart rate. The children had to measure their pulses to calculate their heart rates before and after exercising.

On Wednesday, international sprinter Frederick Afrifa came to school for our Sports for Schools Challenge Day. The children had a wonderful time completed their sponsored circuit, and some Year 6s even had the opportunity to race against Fred himself.

On Thursday the children visited Year 1 and were 'reading buddies' for the children in Rabbit and Squirrel Class. They did a wonderful job of helping their buddy to sound out their words, and then wrote a comment in the children's Home-School Communication Books. We look forward to being invited back.
