Aylmerton Residential: An Adventure to Remember!
On Friday morning, the children arrived at school bright and early, excited and ready for an adventure! After packing our bags onto the coach, we set off for Norfolk. The journey took around three hours, but the excitement continued to build as we got closer to Aylmerton Outdoor Education Centre.
When we arrived, some children headed straight for the high ropes and zip line. The children challenged themselves to climb, balance and, of course, take the leap down the zip line! It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to push themselves outside of their comfort zones and encourage one another.
After a long and tiring day, it was time for dinner before heading out into the darkness for our Twilight Safari. The walk lasted around three hours and included lots of fascinating stops. We had the chance to spot woodland creatures, including bats and unusual birds. We also visited an old, gloomy church and saw an enormous oak tree said to be as old as King Henry VIII! By the end of the safari, everyone was exhausted and more than ready for their first night’s sleep.
Day Two – Teamwork and the Monster Trail
After breakfast on our second day, the children got stuck into a range of teamwork and co-operation games. They had to communicate, listen carefully and work together to overcome different challenges. There were plenty of opportunities to learn how important it is to work as a team and support one another.
In the afternoon, the teamwork continued with the exciting Monster Trail! This activity combined teamwork, problem-solving and map-reading skills. Each group was given some basic instructions before using a simple map and compass to navigate through the woods and locate a series of clues.
However, there was an extra challenge... the children had to keep a close eye out for the monsters hiding in the woods!
Working together, the groups successfully solved cryptograms, completed anagrams, followed their maps and discovered rewards along the way. Every group managed to complete the Monster Trail – a fantastic achievement!
That evening, the children headed to the local swimming pool. After another busy day, they enjoyed splashing around in the pool and having some well-deserved free time with their friends. It was a great way to relax, have fun and enjoy each other’s company.
Day Three – Adventures by the Sea
On the third day, we headed to the beautiful Norfolk coast. The children walked along the coastline, taking in the scenery before setting off on a boat trip into the North Sea to look for seals.
Seeing the seals in their natural environment was a real highlight of the trip! The children also had the opportunity to explore rock pools and discover a variety of interesting things along the beach, including semi-precious stones.
It was another action-packed day full of exploration, discovery and adventure.
The Final Day
On our final morning at Aylmerton, the children finished off the team-building activities they had started earlier in the residential. They worked together, encouraged each other and reflected on everything they had achieved during their time away.
Then, sadly, it was time to pack our bags, say goodbye to Aylmerton and make the journey back to school.
The children showed tremendous resilience, independence and teamwork throughout the residential. They supported their friends, faced new challenges and tried things that were outside their comfort zones.
Well done Year 6! What a fantastic trip.
