Year 5 - An Afternoon in the 1500s

A huge welcome back to Year 5 after what we hope was a restful Easter break! 

We started the term with an afternoon in the 1500s to introduce our new topic - Castles and Crowns. 

The children travelled back in time to the Tudor period visiting Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London. At Hampton Court Palace we looked at Tudor artefacts, hypothesising about what they may have been used for, and found out what hobbies King Henry VIII had. The children wrote ‘postcards’ about our weekend there to loved ones back at home.

They were also invited to a banquet where we learnt about the types of foods enjoyed by wealthy Tudors and designed our own dinner plate. At the banquet, they tried a ‘Shrewsbury Biscuit’ and danced to traditional renaissance music.

Unfortunately, the children were then taken to the Tower of London for committing a heinous crime. There they learnt about the crimes that may have been committed in Tudor times and the punishments that prisoners may have faced. They found out more about Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I and their time in the tower.  

Ask your child what their favourite part of the day was! 

This week the children have worked hard on their persuasive writing skills, which you will see in the letter they are bringing home to invite you to Mary's Big Breakfast next week.
