Edible soil

This week as we were learning about soil in Science, we made edible soil to show the different layers of soil and why certain aspects are so important.

Soil is so much more than what’s under our grass. Each layer of earth is defined by its own “horizon”. These horizons run parallel to the ground and serve up distinct characteristics that aid the layers above and below. We created an edible representation by using food with layers!

The children loved this activity and it generated some great discussion, especially when we looked at the importance of worms in our next lesson. Leonard asked whether we would be able to live without worms if they are so important in the development of rich soil.
