Year 5 - Harold Hill Historians

This week in Year 5, we have been learning about why Harold Hill was created. We have learnt that after the Second World War, London was facing significant housing shortages and density problems. Then in 1944, the London County Council established a rebuilding plan called The Great London Plan. They decided that, in East London, a housing estate was to be built at Dagnam Park, which was later named Harold Hill. We also learnt about the different neighbourhood built as well as different housing types. We went on a walk around Harold Hill looking at the different housing types that still exist today.

‘You can see the different houses from the different neighbourhood because some houses are bigger than others. The bigger houses were for the more wealthy families’

‘Some of the houses look like they have been stamped next to each other – they look exactly the same. This must have made it easier for them to build the houses quickly so people could move in after the war.’
