18th June 2021 Heron Class

It's been another busy week in Year 5!

In Maths we have been recapping everything we have learnt about fractions including how to find a fraction of a shape or number, how to write fractions, how to find equivalent fractions and how to add or subtract fractions with common denominators.

On Wednesday we enjoyed our Jigsaw session in the Science Garden where we had circle time in the company of our school chickens. We discussed online safety and what to do if we feel unsafe online. Then we created our own set of rules for an app that would make it appropriate for 7-11 year old users.

In Literacy we continued learning about the habitats orangutans live in, and the devastating effects of palm oil production in Indonesia and Borneo. After writing non-chronological reports about palm oil, we wrote campaign letters to the CEOs of companies that benefit from the production of palm oil. We had to use persuasive techniques including emotive language, rhetorical questions and powerful adjectives to make our letters impactful.

Give us 30 seconds to convince you to consider switching to palm-oil free alternatives on your next shopping trip!

For our theme learning we continued studying Harold Hill in the 1950s learning about the Healthcentre (and the birth of the NHS), Police Station and the origins of Amy's Park.

Ask your child; who is Amy?
