Year 1 MasterChefs

This week, Year 1 were thrilled to take part in Maylands MasterChef 2023. After reading through our food diaries, a clear favourite stood out: pizza! It was therefore decided that we would create our own Mini Greek Yoghurt Pizzas with Tzatziki Dip. We began by recapping important food safety and hygiene reminders. Then, we had to prepare our ingredients, carefully practising the skills we had learned prior, to dice the peppers, slice the tomatoes, grate the cheese and cucumber, and mix the tomato sauce with garlic and herbs. With our vegetables and sauce prepped, we were ready to cook! The children had a go at kneading the dough and flattening it out to create their pizza bases, and then selected their different toppings, before placing them in the oven. Finally, it was time for a taste test!
-
“It was very good because all of the toppings gave it lots of taste” Alice
-
“It was really, really good because there was lots of cheese and I love cheese” Nadine
-
"I thought I wouldn't like pepper, but it's nice" Fatima
-
"It was really crunchy to eat, I liked the toppings" Rylee
During Writing, Rabbit and Squirrel Class revisited their recipe writing skills to recap the steps needed to cook a pizza. In Maths, children practised using coins to make totals to purchase the ingredients, as well as weighing different food items and comparing amounts of mass. Children also had a go at creating their own food plates considering how humans get nutrition from what they eat.
A big congratulations to Daphne, Nadine, Erin and Lyon for making it through to the MasterChef Semi-Finals, where they worked in pairs to cook independently! The judges were wowed by your teamwork and organisation skills.
