Year 6 - Science Week
Back to Latest News
Well done to Year 6 for the amazing Science Week posters they made as their home learning projects this week; from DNA to the link between Nature and Mathematics we really enjoyed seeing your "Connections" themed creations.
As part of Science Week we started to learn about Inheritance and Genetics this week - finding out about the differences between biological and environmental characteristics, and why variation occurs. The children enjoyed showing their understanding through a Jelly Baby Genetics challenge where they created family trees showing inherited characteristics in the offspring of jelly babies. Pine Marten class also created Mr Men and Little Miss family trees, which Polecat class look forward to doing next week.
On Friday we were really lucky to have the opportunity to talk to an actual astrophysicist, Dr Wright. He spoke to us about his day-to-day job role as a scientist, and answered some of our questions about Space. It was fascinating! We really appreciate him taking the time to share some of his knowledge with us, it really inspired the children to think about their own big questions.
Thank you also to the parents and carers who came along to the Year 6 coffee afternoon on Monday, we hope you enjoyed popping in to our Spanish lesson and seeing how your children are getting on with their vocabulary and sentence building! They can now take and place an order in a cafe, and talk about what someone has in their shopping trolley!
And a final thank you to the sports coaches from the Academy who came over to run some extra basketball and football sessions for the Year 6 students this week! They really enjoyed having the opportunity to show off their sporting skills, and learn some new ones too. The coaches were impressed by the children's sportsmanship and talent.
