This week Year 5 have continued their learning about the natural disasters that take place in the Far East. They have enjoyed discussing all of their prior learning about earthquakes and volcanoes, as well as all the countries/territories that they have studied, including Tonga, The Solomon Islands and Indonesia. Year 5 then began thinking about which country they would like to learn about next. Can you guess which country it might be?

In Science, the children planned and carried out an experiment to investigate the definition of ‘solubility.’ They were presented with a variety of different substances (such as soil, coffee, sugar, salt and sand) and were asked to design an experiment to find out which of these substances would dissolve in water. The children had to think of ways to ensure that the experiments they conduct would be fair tests, and after discussions with their groups they identified lots of different ways. This includes stirring for the same amount of time, using the same amount of water to dissolve the substances in and ensuring they used the same amount of each substance. After a thorough investigation, they were able to identify which substances dissolved in water, and later discussed how they could retrieve the dissolved substances back. Ask your child about the different ways they know to separate solutions.
