Y3 - Science Week and cooking challenge
Back to Latest News
This week was Science Week. In Y3 we learned about the primatologist Jane Goodall and used chatta to present some of our learning to our peers. On Friday we completed a nest-building challenge using materials we found on the school grounds. We learned about Gentoo Penguins, whose habitat is threatened by climate change, and we tested the durability of the nests we made to understand the challenges the penguins face when trying to build nests in an area of Antarctica where the weather is changing and becoming more rainy and windy. We tested our nests with a water spray bottle (to mimic rain) and by fanning the nests (to mimic the wind). To make it even more challenging, we used pegs instead of our hands to pick up and place our building materials, to mimic the penguins' beaks!
This week was also Y3's turn to cook with our vegetable of the week, as part of our Eat Them to Defeat Them challenge. We cooked with broccoli. We learned that broccoli is a 'super' vegetable with lots of health benefits. We made broccoli and cheese soup and broccoli bread. We practised our peeling, chopping and grating skills, as well as our team work skills. We had to observe good practise for safety and hygiene in the kitchen and we worked together really well to put together all the parts of the recipes and clean up afterwards too. We all enjoyed trying what we made and lots of us went back for seconds!
