Year 6 - Banksy

This week we have really enjoyed continuing to read our new class book: Asha and The Spirit Bird by Jasbinder Bilan. The story is set in India so the children have created factfiles about the country, explaining some of the ways that it is different to our own.

In the story, Asha believes a lamagaia to be the spirit of her grandmother. Did you know that lamagaia (or lammergeier) is another name for the bearded vulture? The children researched bearded vultures and wrote facts about them in Literacy. Ask them to share their favourite fact with you at home. 

The children also completed a Maths Challenge this week; solving clues to discover who the culprit of a cinema crime was. They showed excellent teamwork and problem solving skills, whilst applying their mathematical understanding. 

In Art this fortnight we have began to study the famous street artist Banksy. We looked at the piece of art he had painted in Clacton-on-Sea in 2014, and then created our own pieces inspired by this. The children adapted the piece to show positive messages, welcoming refugees from overseas. Some of the children in Year 6 decided to create a piece inspired by the recent conflict in Ukraine, welcoming Ukrainian refugees to the local area. 

We also celebrated World Book Day this week, and were very impressed with the creative costumes that the children had put together at home. Well done to our two winners; Gangsta Granny and Tintin.
