Year 6 - Computing Day and Pumpkin Pie
Back to Latest News
In Year 6 this week we enjoyed becoming expert bakers! Following our learning last week about Thanksgiving, we baked our own traditional pumpkin pie dessert. We worked incredibly well as a team to prepare the dessert, and wrote our own pumpkin pie recipe following our success. We also took on the role of a food critic in Literacy, reviewing our pumpkin pie and using imperative verbs.
On Tuesday we had a Computing day where we were app planners. We thought carefully about problems that children face today, and came up with ideas to help solve them. We then conducted some market research and reviewed competitor apps for our idea, seeing what improvements could be made and taking feedback from the app users. In teams, we created a pitch for our app ideas and presented them to the class in the style of Dragon’s Den. The range of ideas, and quality of presentations, were very impressive! Ask your child about the app that they designed.
We also started practising some life skills and wrote our own CVs. We included our school experiences and skills, and also any additional responsibilities that we have had during our school career.
In Science we learnt about the impacts that smoking and other legal drugs such as caffeine or alcohol can have on our health. We considered the reasons why people may start smoking, and also the reasons why it is difficult to stop. We then created posters to present our findings about the risks, laws and effects of caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and e-cigarettes.
We have included the recipe on this blog post in case you would like to make your own pumpkin pie at home!
