Year 3 have had a very exciting day as we were learning all about computing. Children completed a carousel of activities on the following topics:

- We were representing numbers in binary code to practise our computational thinking skills.

- We had a special focus on how to stay safe online. Firstly we looked at online relationships where we learnt about respectful behaviour and online profiles. Next, we studied and discussed how our online identity will be different from our offline identity. The children enjoyed designing fun, anonymous usernames that they could use instead of their real names.

- One activity involved us exploring a laptop, working on our basic computer skills. We learnt how to log on and where to locate applications like Microsoft Word and Google Chrome. We learnt how to save documents.

- We learn about URL codes and what each part means. We enjoyed watching how the URL changes with each click on the web.

- Finally, children used the website feature, X-Ray Goggles, to edit the HTML code of familiar websites. This enabled us to edit the title and subheadings.

Ask your child:

- What picture would be appropriate for an online profile?

- What is the difference between websites ending in .com and .co.uk?
