Sporting News

This Sports Blog is aimed at how our school keeps all of us healthy, fit and active. We’re going to dive into all the different sports we do, mental awareness, achievements both inside and outside of school and interesting interviews each edition with a different member of staff. We are very excited to be taking over as the new Editors-In-Chief and we can’t wait to spend the year digging deep into sports at Maylands.

In this edition we have interviewed our kitchen staff to see how they make our food suitable for a nutritional balanced diet. We will also be looking at awards outside of school and what sports we do.

Sports at Maylands

We do plenty of sports at Maylands, keeping us- the pupils - active at all times. Our amazing PE teacher, Mr Juson, keeps us healthy, fit and ready for the future. We do a variety of activities such as; basketball, football, netball, athletics and so much more! Everyone enjoys the sports we do here and looks forward to our end of term Interhouse tournaments. We also participate in festivals and tournaments outside of school and have done really well with athletics and netball. We have before and after school clubs that offer different activities such as karate, rugby, multisport and tennis. Are you interested? Call or visit the office to sign up.

Achievements

Many of the pupils at Maylands take part in sports or activities outside of school and in every edition, we will be shinning a spotlight on certain year groups and individuals who have made progress in these sports.

In this terms blog, we are congratulating two learners from Year 6 who have received a football award and a brown belt in jujitsu.

Well done, we know you must have worked incredibly hard to earn them.

Interview

We interviewed Chris, from the schools catering service, to find out more about his job.

Is it hard to make a balanced diet for picky eaters?

“It is a lot easier now as there is a variety of food. It is also a lot easier in schools, but we can’t control what they eat at home. But generally overall, children are eating a lot healthier, which makes cooking for them easier.”

Is it harder to make a balanced diet for children or for adults? Why?

“Adults, because for children you can teach them how to eat and expose them to different things that they can try. Whereas adults are used to eating certain foods and what they usually eat is suited to their tastes.”

Is there a difference between secondary schools and primary schools with their food choices?

“Secondary schools have more of a variety of food whereas children in primary schools select their lunches before they eat. People in secondary schools pick their food when they come up.”

What made you want to work for school catering?

“I worked with my friend Henry for ten years and he encouraged me to become a school caterer. I changed from working in a restaurant to a school. It was quite a shocking difference.”

Thank you to Chris for letting us interview him. We look forward to seeing all the nutrious food his team will make.

See you all in next terms edition where we will be interviewing one of our teachers and looking at achievements in Year 4 and 5.

Util then, goodbye and Merry Christmas!
