Year 2 - Colchester Zoo!

This week, Year 2 set off on an exciting adventure to Colchester Zoo as part of our topic, “Can a Tiger Come to Tea?” The children were full of curiosity (and a few roars!) as we explored the zoo and looked out for all sorts of amazing animals.

We were especially hoping to spot a tiger to invite for tea, but unfortunately, the tiger was feeling shy and decided to stay hidden that day! The children showed great patience and understanding, agreeing that perhaps the tiger was enjoying eating its meal in privacy.

Even though the tiger was hiding, there was still so much to see and learn. The children were thrilled to see Andeancondors, which they recognised from one of their phonics books! It was wonderful to hear them share facts and make connections to their learning back in the classroom.

We also met giraffes, elephants, a very regal and sleeping lion, aardvarks, cheeky monkeys a slow sloth and playful seals splashing about in the water around us. The children loved watching how each animal moved, ate, and interacted with its friends.

As part of our science learning, we have been finding out about animal habitats, where animals live and how their environments meet their needs. During our visit, the children observed the different habitats carefully, noticing how the animals’ homes at the zoo were designed to be similar to their natural environments. They discussed how some animals need hot, dry spaces, while others prefer cooler or wetter areas. It was fantastic to see the children applying what they’ve learned in science to the real world around them!

Everyone showed fantastic behaviour throughout the day, listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and showing kindness to each other and the animals. We were so proud of how curious and caring our Year 2 explorers were!

It was a day full of laughter, learning, and wild discoveries. Who knows, maybe next time the tiger will come out to say hello!
