Year 2 - A Journey to the Moon!

During Science week, Year 2 children learnt all about the historic Apollo 11 Moon Landing and the incredible journey of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Children embarked themselves on an exciting mission to the Moon, experiencing space travel in their very own rocket. Once they "landed," they explored the wonders space—taking a close look at space objects, diving into space books, and even tasting real astronaut food! Children also put their creativity and scientific thinking to the test by designing their own moon rovers.  Children carefully selected suitable materials, and thought about how their creations would move across the Moon’s surface. With a focus on design and technology, they worked through the engineering process and created fantastic moon rovers!

Following Science Week, Year 2 had an incredible surprise! They received an important parcel containing lunar samples and meteorites, which they were able to study up close. This hands-on experience gave them a deeper understanding of the surface of the moon. Year 2 children also looked at images of footprints left by astronauts on the moon and compared them to footprints made in different materials. They discussed which material was most similar to lunar soil and why the footprints have remained on the moon for so long. It was an exciting and unforgettable time for the children leaving them with lasting memories of space exploration!
