Year 6 - Forest School Fire Building

Year 6 have been learning how to prepare and make a fire at Forest School. They prepared the fire wood successfully using the sheath knife and then used this wood for the fire.

I spoke to the children about how to make a fire successful, the safety elements around a larger scale fire and the difference between a larger scale fire and a kelly kettle fire. The children used their skills they had learnt from the kelly kettle fire to the larger fire and they were extremely successful.

The children used the 'waffle technique' to make the base of the fire and then used cotton wool at the top so the fire would catch onto this. Each child used the magnesium striker to try and light the fire and some were successful which meant they received a stamp on their 'Oak Tree Forest School Card.' The fire was a success and it was a great day for a fire as it definitely warmed them up.

I was extremely impressed with the children as they ensured they stayed safe throughout the course of the fire making by: staying in the respect position, ensuring the fire safety precautions were in place and leaving ‘no trace’ behind.
