Year 1 had a fantastic time this week visiting Southend Sealife, with Rabbit and Squirrel joining us for the adventure. When we arrived, we were given maps to plan our route around the areas, as well as a schedule with the animal feeding times. As we made our way around the venue, we saw many different fish, including those that live along our local coastlines, and animals from rivers and oceans far across the world. Then, we explored the Wild Zone, with animals such as monkeys, meerkats, mongoose and tortoises. The children confidently used their Science learning to describe the different animal characteristics, identify which animal group they belonged to, and use their diet to consider whether they classified as omnivores, carnivores or herbivores. The dinosaur and butterfly exhibitions were popular favourites, allowing us to travel back in time and be face to face with dinosaurs, before moving to the butterfly enclosure, where if you were very lucky (and very still) one of the beautiful creatures may land on you. The children also loved being able to see the meerkats and penguins at feeding time. Can your child tell you what they enjoyed most about our trip? Which animal was their favourite? Can they remember any fascinating facts?
