Gardening - pumpkins

Before the summer holidays we sowed pumpkin seeds keeping our fingers crossed that they would grow while we weren’t at school. Luckily they survived the hot summer and were flourishing. They didn’t grow as big as last year but we had a nice selection of pumpkins growing. 

We picked one pumpkin for our fireworks night and ran a competition - ‘guess the weight of the pumpkin’.  The pumpkin weighed 2.6kg And the winner guessed 2.7kg. We let them grow a bit longer and for them to all turn orange. 

It was then year 6’s turn to use them. They learnt about Thanksgiving in class and used the pumpkins to make pumpkin pie which is a big feature in Thanksgiving celebrations.   Year 6 then shared their pumpkin pie with their grown ups who came in for tea and a slice of pie. 

We have one pumpkin left and we are going to get the seeds out tomorrow and decide what to do with the flesh, maybe some soup because it’s cold!
