This week Year 5 had a mystery to solve! After Mrs Vingoe's cupcake went missing from the staff room, with only an anonymous note left behind, we decided to use our scientific skills and knowledge to find the culprit of this terrible crime.

Using chromatography (a method for separating mixtures) we tested the pens of different members of staff to find the ink that matched the note left behind.

Children worked in groups to conduct their investigation, looking carefully at their results and drawing conclusions. Well done to our Year 5 detectives for solving the crime. Ask your child how they found out which suspect was most likely to be guilty!

After the investigation we learnt about people who use chromatography in their jobs including the secret service and sports scientists.
