Last week, Year 5 were fully emmersed into Indonesian culture. They learnt about Indonesia's language, currency, capital city, food and animals. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the culture of a different country and produced excellent work.

They had the opportunity to hold Indonesian currency Rupiah and compare it to the English Pound. Some of our children said:

'It is very similar to our English money, it also has an important person on the front.'

'I can't believe that £1 is equivalent to 17,000 Rupiah.'

On Thursday, the children cooked an Indonesian dish - Nasi Goreng. They spent time learning about the dish and the ingredients within during a Chatta lesson. The children chopped and grated vegetables, used a wok to fry the vegetables and rice and a small pan to fry an egg. Most of the children enjoyed tasting the dish and wanted to make it at home. The recipe is attached below if you would like to cook it with your child:

Ingredients:

2 carrot, grated

1 pepper, chopped

2 spring onions, chopped

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tsp garlic paste

200g cooked brown rice

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 pinch of salt

1 pinch of pepper

1 egg

Method:

1. Prepare your vegetables by grating the carrot and chopping the pepper and spring onions.

2. In a wok, add the vegetable oil and garlic puree.

3. Add the vegetables to the wok and stir for 3 minutes.

4. Next, add the brown rice and stir to warm through.

5. Pour in the soy sauce and some salt and pepper.

6. Place the rice and vegetables on a plate.

7. Next, crack an egg into a bowl.

8. Fry until the white is nearly set.

9. Serve the dish by placing the egg on top of the rice and vegetables.

10. Enjoy!

Well done Year 5 for showing engagement and curiosity when learning about a different culture.
