Year 6 - Dreamcatchers
Back to Latest News
As part of our unit about Native Americans we learnt about the Ojibwe tribe and some of their traditions this week. Did you know - one of the things the Ojibwe tribe are most well-known for is their beautiful dreamcatchers?
The children learnt about the legend of Nokomis and the spider, and how this inspired Native American people to weave their own dreamcatching webs to hang above the sleeping places of children and babies. After writing the legend in their own words, children began to weave their own dreamcatchers. We have learnt that weaving is a tricky skill that takes lots of time and determination!
We also talked about the importance of remembering to be mindful and respectful of others' cultures, discussing the meaning of 'cultural appropriation'. Our motto is - appreciate, don't appropriate!
In Spanish this week we continued learning how to say the different members of our family in spanish, and who we live with.
Over the half-term children have been set a project about a North American country of their choice. They could create a presentation, a report, a factfile, a travel brochure, a poster, a recipe book or a short film. We look forward to seeing what they can create!
