Year 6 - Victorian Christmas

For our final week of the Autumn term we are continuing our mini topic all about Victorian Christmas. 

The children have worked hard to make their own Christmas Cracker, after learning about Victorian confectioner Tom Smith who was inspired by the French bonbon to create a more interesting way of presenting sweets at Christmas time. Our Christmas crackers contain a handwritten Christmas joke, a chocolate bonbon, a paper hat and of course a snapper. We hope the children can bring them home and enjoy them with someone special! 

As well as creating their own crackers the children have also learnt how to do Copperplate Calligraphy to write inside their cross-stitch Christmas cards. Each child followed the pattern created by Mrs Perry to stitch a Christmas tree, after learning about the birth of this tradition during Victorian times. We also learnt about famous British designer, William Morris, and the children have been drawing or colouring their own patterns to create a sheet of wrapping paper. 

Well done to all of Year 6 for a wonderful performance in their Christmas Assembly, and for working so hard this term. We wish you all a very restful break, and look forward to seeing everyone in January!
