Year 6 - Thanksgiving
Back to Latest NewsYear 6 were very busy with their learning this week!
We learnt all about the real story of Pocahontas and discussed the facts and fiction of her story throughout history. We enjoyed finding out about her life with her husband John Rolfe (not John Smith as many of us believed!) and how she moved to England in 1616.
We also found out all about American Thanksgiving and the origins of the holiday. We learnt all about the Pilgrims and their journey to North America on the Mayflower. Did you know that the first Thanksgiving was to show gratitude to God for the first Harvest and to the Native Americans for helping the Pilgrims to grow their crops? We made a non-chronological report in Literacy to present our learning. Ask your child about the differences between Thanksgiving celebrations in the past and today.
In Maths, we learnt how to find the scale factor when comparing two corresponding amounts. We also continued out learning about percentages and were able to find percentages of convenient numbers.
In Science, we became health and fitness experts and created workout guides and recipes to promote a healthy lifestyle. We also considered adaptations that would need to be made if someone had any dietary requirements or disabilities. Ask your child about the workout guide or recipe they created this week.
We also enjoyed being 'reading buddies' for Year 3, listening to our partner read and asking them questions about their books.
