This week we introduced our new Literacy topic with an afternoon aboard RMS Titanic. After randomly selecting their tickets, children got into character as actual guests on board the ship's maiden voyage. Stewards led the guests to the ship and showed them to their designated areas; first, second or third class. In third class guests enjoyed games of cards, ball and cup, and a simple biscuit. Second class guests were treated to games of chess, quoits, cards and dominoes and served a jam biscuit. In first class, guests were waited on hand and foot as they enjoyed dressing up in fine costume jewellery and nibbling on teacakes and caramel wafers. At around 2:00am the ship hit an iceberg, and some of the guests were safely evacuated to the lifeboat out on deck. Sadly there was not space for all of the guests and for many their journey ended here.

Following our exciting trip we began our new class book - The Titanic Detective Agency by Lindsay Littleson. We read the exciting letter we had received from the author, and made lots of predictions about what might happen in her book. We also learnt lots more about the RMS Titanic and the children wrote non-chronological reports about the famous ship.

In Maths we are studying pie charts and percentages, as well as learning about different types of averages; starting with the range. At home, ask us to tell you the range of a set of data or information - such as the cost of fruit and vegetables in the weekly shopping.

This week we also started our new topic in Science - Evolution. We read two very interesting picture books and created our own illustrated timelines showing the evolution of species.
