Year 1 has had a brilliant and intriguing few days this first week back. Firstly, we were surprised when we returned from visiting the library and DT room to our classrooms and found a huge mess! There were black and white feathers everywhere, ice, lots of strange footprints across the room and even some extremely smelly sardines – these we all agreed where not very nice. After looking further at all the clues left in the classroom, we agreed we thought a penguin had visited our classes. We couldn’t believe it and were so excited. This led to a debate between us to find out whether or not all penguins live only in cold places. We did some research and looked at photos before we cast our vote.

We also had fun exploring some of the new areas we have in our garden. Our favourite was having a hot chocolate in our coffee shop and playing with penguins and other animals from Antarctica and the artic. We can’t wait to start to build igloos in our big construction soon.

Then yesterday when we came into school, and we saw frost covering all of our garden. We wanted to find out more about what happens when the ground freezes, so we decided to go and investigate. We found that when looking closer at the frost on the plants, you could see that it wasn’t like snow, but lots of little spikes of ice. It made the leaves look really fluffy! We also decided to put our hands on the frost to see what would happen. We had fun making lots of handprints around the garden.
