Results 2023

The information below compares the attainment of our pupils with national averages.

We are delighted with the excellent results across the school again this year. Well done to all our children and the hard-working staff.

Early Years Foundation Stage

74% of pupils in Reception attained a Good Level of Development against the Early Years Framework. This is above the national average of 67% which has been consistent since 2016.

A Good Level of Development is defined as children working at the expected standard in the prime areas of learning (personal, social and emotional development; physical development; and communication and language) and in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

Year One Phonic Screening

81% of pupils in Year One attained the expected standard in the Phonic Screening test. This is higher than the national average once again (79%).

Key Stage One

 At the end of Key Stage 1 (Year2), teachers are required to assess each child in the areas of reading, writing, maths and science. National Curriculum assessment tests are used to support teachers’ judgements.

Judgements are made as follows:

Expected Standard – Working at the expected standard for a child at the end of Year 2

Greater Depth – Working at greater depth within the expected standard, with a strong understanding of the curriculum.

Despite two years of effected learning due to COVID interruption in their early development, the pupils demonstrated a good recovery from an adapted curriculum arrangement to meet their needs. The pupils in our school attained above the national average in every subject area.

Reading: 85% (national 68%) with 31% working at a higher standard, compared to 18% of pupils nationally.

Writing: 81% (national 60%) with 12% working at the higher standard compared to 15% of pupils nationally.

Maths: 83% (national 71%) with 24% working at a higher standard, compared to 15% of pupils nationally.

Key Stage Two

MTC

83% of children in Year 4 passed the Multiplication Screening Check with an average of over 21 out of 25. The national average is 19.8.

There is no expected standard threshold for the MTC. The check will determine whether a pupil can fluently recall multiplication tables.

At the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6), Standard Assessment Tests are used to assess each child in the areas of reading, maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling. The tests are marked externally.

Teacher assessments, moderated internally and externally are used to assess pupils’ written standards.

Judgements are made as follows:

Expected Standard – Working at the expected standard for a child at the end of Year 6

Higher Standard – Working at greater depth within the expected standard, with a strong understanding of the curriculum.

Pre-Key-Stage Standard- for pupils who are working below the standard of national curriculum assessments and are engaged in subject-specific study, or who have not completed the relevant programme of study

Despite the challenges following COVID interruption of school attendance and disruption of the taught curriculum for Years 3 and 4, pupils made accelerated progress and were well-prepared for Secondary education where they have continued to thrive.

End of Year 6 results:

Reading: 58% (national 73%) with 31% working at a higher standard, compared to 28% of pupils nationally.

Writing: 77% (national 71%) with 23% working at a higher standard, compared to 13% of pupils nationally.

Maths: 57% (national 73%) with 18% working at a higher standard, compared to 23% of pupils nationally.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test results were 63% (national 72%) with 26% at a higher standard.

Science: 94% of pupils met or exceeded national standards (national 80%).

The combined Reading, Maths and Writing attainment for Maylands was 48% (national 59%) with 11% working at a higher standard, compared to 8% of pupils nationally.
