6th November 2020 Kingfisher Class

This week we have been learning about Dia de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration that happens on the 1st and 2nd November. When the children arrived at school on Monday morning they found an ofrenda in their classroom. The children learnt about all of the things typically found on an ofrenda, including Pan de Muertos (bread of the dead) - a sweet bread flavoured with orange and cinnamon, which they baked at school. In their theme learning the children designed their own ofrenda, alebrije (spirit animal) and sugar skull. We wrote about the origins of sugar skulls and alebrijes, as well as doing some creative writing based on the Disney film Coco. The children continued their Spanish learning this week with vocabulary around the festival.

During our Forest School session we explored the grounds of our school visiting the chickens in the science area, and exploring the conservation area where there is a pond and orchard. The children enjoyed playing group games, and identifying some of the plants growing in our school grounds.
